Welcome from Paul

Camp Penuel Costa Rica has a specific focus to give children ages 7-11 the opportunity to know their heavenly Father through Christ Jesus and the abundant life that he offers through the power and love of the Holy Spirit. The Vision is to rally a multi-ethnic team of support to work towards providing facilities of excellence and diversity so that each child can have a wealth of new, safe, and fun experiences that they will remember for their lifetime, but more importantly, that are God-anointed and forever will change their lives for good.

Congratulations!! Camp Penuel Costa Rica is a Certified Blue Banner Farm

Blue Banner FarmWhat does this mean? The Blue Banner Ecology Program in Costa Rica was founded to improve education and information about the environment. It is a certification program granted every year to those communities, farms, and beaches that score at least 90% for all requirements-appropriate use of water, land, fuel and energy; minimizing herbicides/pesticides; preserving water sources; and educating others. The goal of CPCR is to be 100% organically certified over the next 5 years. An award will be given to the Camp in June!! Stay tuned.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ Jesus,
Greetings to you from Costa Rica!

I want to thank each of you for taking your time to interact with Lois and Mark on their recent trip throughout the Midwestern and Southern States of the USA! In 22 days they traveled over 4100 miles, visited over 20 churches, personally talked to more than 500 folks and connected via email with many others.

Dear Friends of the Camp,

On March 1st I met Claudia Poll. It was a lifelong dream. Who is she? She won the only Olympic gold medal for Costa Rica in the history of the Olympic games. How did I meet her? I saw her in a public place, at a big supermarket in San Jose, and I introduced myself. She was very polite, and I thanked her for what she did to inspire my daughter, who was just a baby when she won the 200 meter freestyle swimming event.

Dear Friends of the Camp,

As the Olympic Games are unfolding once again, we marvel at the accomplishments of the likes of Katie Ledecky, an up and coming USA swimming champion, and of others like Michael Phelps who won his 19th gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Just for the record, Costa Rica holds one gold medal in the history of the Summer Olympic Games, and it was won in Atlanta in 1996 by Claudia Poll in 200 meters freestyle. I remember because I was new in Costa Rica back then, and it was a big moment for our little country, and I especially remember because my daughter had just been born in January of that year, and I thought to myself, “One day.” Well, my daughter is about the same age of Katie Ledecky, and “that day” never came. My daughter was a very good swimmer, and I just played tennis with her out at the camp the other day and she displays remarkable athletic ability, but I’m happy with the way that my daughter turned out, without gold medals dangling from her neck, as I see her develop her life in her Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear Friends,

Since I last wrote you about Shequin, he suddenly disappeared.  I spoke with the family from our church that lives in his barrio and helped get him to the camp 5 years ago.  Shequin is one of so many children who desperately needs to know how much Jesus loves them despite all the rejection that they’ve received from the world.  We’re still praying that he’ll show up again and well, and that he’ll accept the invitation that he received to enter into a ministry that will care for him and love him.

Dear Friends,

A few years back, God really touched me after spending the night at a hospital with a camper from a shanty town area close to Esparza and then taking him home and seeing the place that was his home.  I was a bit taken back by what I saw - a dirt floor, makeshift walls and roof, the very, very basics.

Dear Friends of the Camp,

Thanks to the vision of our solar team, the help of a local Costa Rican solar company, and the donations of you, our supporters, our solar dream is now a reality.  On Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. all 7 of us, three from our solar team and three helpers/observers and the camp director peaked out the back of our power house and looked at our buildings to the beautiful site of seeing the camp lighted up at mid-day.  We were thrilled to know that everything is working as it should and now, when anyone comes to the camp and flips a switch, it will do what it’s supposed to do, day or night, rain or shine, well maybe with the exception of extended cloudy weather.

Dear Friends of the Camp,

We’ve kicked off another camping season, and we’re off and running, on the track, that is.  How easy it is to start out the year off and running, but not on the right track.  The track that we’re on pushes the Gospel Train, the train that Jesus conducts, bringing more and more people aboard as the Good News of new life in Jesus through his putting to death our sins and our old life that led to a dead end.  This gospel is being announced with passion by our staff here at the camp, and I pray you, too, receive inspiration this year to stay on track and be an integral part of this gospel train that is stopping in every town, every nation, every tribe and race.

Dear Friends,

Now that my two children are grown up, I'm more and more thankful for each moment that I spend with my them.  Even though the song "Butterfly Kisses," is about a father reflecting on his relationship with his daughter as he hands her over to be married, I really, really can relate to the phrase, "With all that I've done wrong, I must have done something right."  I feel that way about my relationship to my son Roy also.  I can't redeem the past, but I'm thankful for each moment that I can spend with him.  One of those moments was this past Saturday, as he and I and another father/son combination Azarias and Erick respectively, helped finish "plyrocking" the inside and outside walls of our powerhouse building, that will be our new power distribution center by the end of the year.  There is a lot of work to be done, but Erick, an engineer, heads up our team of young engineers that is speer-heading this solar project.  I am thankful for them.  In mid-December Rick from Florida is scheduled to come and connect the solar system together so that we hope to have 2400 watts of power available for use at the camp.  For more information on this project go to the homepage and look at the article on this project.

Dear Friends of the Camp,

On January 8, 2006 Pastor Harry and Carole Douma, founders of Camp Penuel, USA, and Dave Stuehmeyer, who has many, many years with the organization joined us as Carole cut the ribbon to officially open Camp Penuel Costa Rica.  Now, ten years later, we are about to open a new chapter in the life of this mission camp.  We have had our share of struggles, but we’ve hopefully learned from a lot of our mistakes and will move into the second decade of this ministry ready to face the new sets of challenges that await us so that each child who comes to camp is placed in an environment where the Holy Spirit can do amazing things to heal the child from many heartaches and disappointments and move him or her into a living relationship with Jesus Christ.
