Dear Friends of the Camp,

As the Olympic Games are unfolding once again, we marvel at the accomplishments of the likes of Katie Ledecky, an up and coming USA swimming champion, and of others like Michael Phelps who won his 19th gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Just for the record, Costa Rica holds one gold medal in the history of the Summer Olympic Games, and it was won in Atlanta in 1996 by Claudia Poll in 200 meters freestyle. I remember because I was new in Costa Rica back then, and it was a big moment for our little country, and I especially remember because my daughter had just been born in January of that year, and I thought to myself, “One day.” Well, my daughter is about the same age of Katie Ledecky, and “that day” never came. My daughter was a very good swimmer, and I just played tennis with her out at the camp the other day and she displays remarkable athletic ability, but I’m happy with the way that my daughter turned out, without gold medals dangling from her neck, as I see her develop her life in her Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear Friends of the Camp,

Thanks to the vision of our solar team, the help of a local Costa Rican solar company, and the donations of you, our supporters, our solar dream is now a reality.  On Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. all 7 of us, three from our solar team and three helpers/observers and the camp director peaked out the back of our power house and looked at our buildings to the beautiful site of seeing the camp lighted up at mid-day.  We were thrilled to know that everything is working as it should and now, when anyone comes to the camp and flips a switch, it will do what it’s supposed to do, day or night, rain or shine, well maybe with the exception of extended cloudy weather.

Dear Friends of the Camp,

We’ve kicked off another camping season, and we’re off and running, on the track, that is.  How easy it is to start out the year off and running, but not on the right track.  The track that we’re on pushes the Gospel Train, the train that Jesus conducts, bringing more and more people aboard as the Good News of new life in Jesus through his putting to death our sins and our old life that led to a dead end.  This gospel is being announced with passion by our staff here at the camp, and I pray you, too, receive inspiration this year to stay on track and be an integral part of this gospel train that is stopping in every town, every nation, every tribe and race.

Dear Friends of the Camp,

On January 8, 2006 Pastor Harry and Carole Douma, founders of Camp Penuel, USA, and Dave Stuehmeyer, who has many, many years with the organization joined us as Carole cut the ribbon to officially open Camp Penuel Costa Rica.  Now, ten years later, we are about to open a new chapter in the life of this mission camp.  We have had our share of struggles, but we’ve hopefully learned from a lot of our mistakes and will move into the second decade of this ministry ready to face the new sets of challenges that await us so that each child who comes to camp is placed in an environment where the Holy Spirit can do amazing things to heal the child from many heartaches and disappointments and move him or her into a living relationship with Jesus Christ.

Hello to our faithful friends,

This is my first formal communication with all of you this year, so I pray that this year will be a fruitful one for you and that you will grow closer to the Lord!  Although it’s not growing season right now for crops in the Northern Hemisphere, I believe that a lot of seeds are being planted for the kingdom of God, and I thank God that the camp is participating in the move of God in these last days.  The Word of God is like a seed that a sower plants, and the hope is that that seed is planted in fertile hearts who are ready to embrace the Lord Jesus as their Savior and grow closer to him each day.  You and I know that the heart of a child is fertile ground.  This past January, we were able to work in key neighborhoods of San Jose and our region of Puntarenas, with even some children coming from the Caribbean side of the country and a few from an island called Isla Chira, in a gulf that leads into the Pacific Ocean on our West side of the country.  We also worked for the first time with two ministries, one from our Puntarenas area and another from the San Jose area, a couple of miles from the USA embassy.  Let me tell you about them.

Dear Friends of the Camp,

God has blessed us over the years with many people who have come along side of us and helped us to develop the camp. Now, through the initiative of a team of four Costa Rican electrical engineers and a man from the States, we recently formed an engineering team to develop a proposal for establishing a fully self-sufficient and independent energy system for the camp from start to finish.

Dear Friends,

We were invited to visit a church who we're working closely with at the camp. We brought the camp to a place called "La Carpio" where God is changing many lives from a life of sin to the abundant life in Christ. We were privileged to bring the gospel to them through song, skits, and the preached word.

Dear friends,

Each of us might think that we can do so little to make a difference in this world. That might be true, but together, we can make a huge difference! Jesus calls each of us to respond to his invitation: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)” When we enter into God’s rest, God makes peace with us through the forgiveness of our sins. He makes the great exchange – he takes on our load and he gives us his heart full of love for him and others. I’m sharing this with you because I need it also. Every day, I need the Lord to refresh me so that working at the camp, working with the children, working in the neighborhood by the camp, working with mission groups, going and serving at the church, never becomes a routine or lifeless. God has made us his children and friends of Jesus through what he did for us on the cross to take away our old self and put his new, living, resurrected self inside each of us to serve him with thankful hearts.

Dear Friends of Camp Penuel Costa Rica,

This fall marked the last of our camps for this year, but a first for us as well: a three-day camp tailored to adults with special needs.
